The Eye Bank Association of America's (EBAA) mission is the restoration of sight through the
promotion and advancement of eye banking. Established in 1961 by the American Academy of
Ophthalmology's Committee on Eye Banks, the EBAA is the oldest national association of transplantation organizations
in the United States.
The EBAA has lead the transplantation field with the establishment of medical standards for the
procurement and distribution of corneal tissue, accreditation of eye banks, and comprehensive education
programs for doctors, technicians and administrators.
Medical Standards
Through the establishment of medical standards the eye banking community strives to ensure the
superior quality of human eye tissue provided for transplantation. The EBAA Medical Advisory Board
sets guidelines for member banks to maintain the highest proficiency in eye tissue procurement,
preservation, storage and transplantation. EBAA Medical Standards are endorsed by the American
Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and are reviewed semi-annually.
Affiliations
The R. Townley Paton Society, named after the founder of modern eye banking, whose members are
ophthalmologists, corneal surgeons, and researchers-was established in 1985 to honor Dr. Paton and
provide a link between the EBAA and corneal surgeons.
